  11. Have you ever wanted a lineman's handset?   Surely  every  phreak
  12. has  at  least  once  considered the phun that he could have with
  13. one.  After searching unlocked phone company trucks for  one  for
  14. months,  we  had an idea.  We could build one.  We did, and named
  15. it the "Beige Box," simply because that is the color of ours.  In
  16. the  following  file  we  will give complete instructions for the
  17. construction and use of a Beige Box.

  22. CONSTRUCTION

  25. The construction is very simple.  First, you must understand  the
  26. concept  of the device.  In a modular jack, there are four wires.
  27. These are red, green, yellow, and black.  For a single line tele-
  28. phone,  however, only two matter: the red (ring) and green (tip).
  29. The yellow and black are  not  necessary  for  this  project.   A
  30. lineman's handset only has two clips on it: the ring and the tip.

  33. You will need a phone (we recommend a touch-tone) with a modular
  34. plug,  a  modular jack, and two large alligator clips (preferably
  35. red and green, respectively).  Take the modular jack and look  at
  36. the  bottom of its casing.  There should be a grey jack with four
  37. wires (red, green, yellow, and black) leading out of it.  To  the
  38. end  of  the red wire attach a red alligator clip.  To the end of
  39. the green wire attach a green alligator  clip.   The  yellow  and
  40. black  wires can be removed, although I would only set them aside
  41. so that you can use the modular jack in future projects.  Now in-
  42. sert your telephone's modular plug into the modular jack.  That's
  43. it.

  46. This particular model is nice because it can be easily  made,  is
  47. inexpensive,  uses  common  parts  that are readily available, is
  48. small, is lightweight, and does not require the destruction of  a
  49. phone.

  54. BEIGE BOX USES 
  55. --------------

  57. There are many uses for the Beige Box.  However, before  you  can
  58. use  it,  you  must  know  how to attach it to its output device.
  59. This device can be any of several Bell switching  apparatus  that
  60. include  terminal  sets (i.e., remote switching centers, bridging
  61. heads, cans, etc.).  To open most Bell  Telephone  switching  ap-
  62. paratus,  you  must  have  a 7/16 inch hex driver.  This piece of
  63. equipment can be picked up at your local  hardware  store.   With
  64. your 7/16 hex driver, turn the security bolt(s) approximately 1/8
  65. of an inch counter-clockwise and open.  If your output device  is
  66. locked,  then  you  must have some knowledge of destroying and/or
  67. picking locks.  However, we have never encountered a locked  out-
  68. put  device.  Once you have opened your output device, you should
  69. see a mass of wires connected to terminals.  On most of your out-
  70. put  devices,  the terminals should be labeled "T" (Tip -- if not
  71. labeled, it is usually on the left) and "R" (Ring -- if  not  la-
  72. beled,  it  is  usually  on  the  right).  Remember: Ring - red -
  73. right.  The "Three R's" -- a simple  way  to  remember  which  is
  74. which.

  77. Now you must attach the red alligator  clip  (ring)  to  the  "R"
  78. (ring)  terminal.   Attach  the green alligator clip (tip) to the
  79. "T" (tip) terminal.  NOTE: If instead of a  dial  tone  you  hear
  80. nothing,  re-adjust  the  alligator  clips  so  that they are not
  81. touching each other or other terminals.  Also make sure that they
  82. are  firmly  attached.  By this time you should hear a dial tone.
  83. Dial ANI and find out the number that you are using (you wouldn't
  84. want to use your own).

  87.         Here are some practical applications:
  88.             o  Eavesdropping
  89.             o  Long  distance,  static-free  phone  calls  to
  90.                phriends
  91.             o  Dialing direct to Alliance Conferencing  (also
  92.                static-free)
  93.             o  Phucking people over
  94.             o  Bothering the operator at little risk to yourself
  95.             o  Blue Boxing with a greatly reduced  chance  of
  96.                getting caught
  97.             o  Anything at all that you want, since  you  are an
  98.                extension on that line

  103. Eavesdropping

  106. To be most effective, first attach the Beige Box  and  then  your
  107. phone.   This  eliminates  static  caused  by connecting the box,
  108. therefore reducing the potential suspicion of your victim.   When
  109. eavesdropping,  it  is  always best to be neither seen nor heard.
  110. If you hear someone dialing out, do not panic;  but  rather  hang
  111. up, wait, and pick up the receiver again.  The person will either
  112. have hung up or tried to  complete  their  call  again.   If  the
  113. latter  is true, then listen in, and perhaps you will find infor-
  114. mation worthy of blackmail!  If you would like to  know  who  you
  115. are listening to, after dialing ANI, pull a CN/A on the number.

  123. This section is self-explanatory, but don't forget to dial a  "1"
  124. before the NPA.

  132. Simply dial 0-700-456-1000 and you  will  get  instructions  from
  133. there.   I  prefer  this  method over PBXs, since PBXs often have
  134. poor reception and are more difficult to come by.

  139. Phucking People Over

  142. This is a very large topic for discussion.   Just  by  using  the
  143. other  functions described, you can create a large phone bill for
  144. the person (they will not have to pay it, but it is a hassle  for
  145. them).   In  addition, since you are an extension of the person's
  146. line, leave your phone off hook, and they will  not  be  able  to
  147. make  or  receive  calls.  This can be extremely nasty because no
  148. one would suspect the cause of the problem.

  156. This is also self-explanatory and can provide hours of entertain-
  157. ment.  Simply ask or say things to her that are offensive and you
  158. would not like traced to your line.  This also  corresponds  with
  159. the previous described section, Phucking People Over.  After all,
  160. guess who's line it gets traced to? He he he...

  170. calls are, once again, not traced to your line.

  175. POTENTIAL RISKS OF  BEIGE  BOXING

  178. Overuse of the Beige Box may cause suspicions within the Gestapo,
  179. and  result in legal problems.  Therefore, I would recommend that
  180. you:
  181.  
  182.         o  Use more than one output device
  183.         o  Choose a secluded spot to do your Beige Boxing
  184.         o  Keep a low profile (i.e., do not post under your  real
  185.            name on a public BBS concerning your accomplishments)
  186.         o  In order to make sure that the enemy has not been  in-
  187.            side your output device, I recommend that you place a 
  188.            piece of transparent tape over the opening of your 
  189.            output device. Therefore, if it is opened in your 
  190.            absence,  the  tape will be displaced and you will be 
  191.            aware of the fact that someone has been intruding upon 
  192.            your territory.
